Words We Wear: Empowerment, Writing, and the Magic of Mantras
When I first saw Katia Designs’ Jewelry on a Facebook ad, I absolutely loved it. It was not only beautiful but shared a message that I wanted to carry close to my heart. That message? “I am f*cking powerful.”
Limitations come in all shapes and sizes. As an author who has been writing from the heart for over a dozen years, I eventually hit a brick wall named “burnout.” I had been climbing that wall, making a bit of progress before sliding down again, before finally realizing that I could simply walk around it instead.
It’s amazing how simple things can be when we let them.
I took advantage of a sale for the jewelry and bought myself a few pieces. Whenever I put them on, whether it’s “I am f*cking powerful” or “I am free” or a simple crescent moon on a chain, I feel empowered to be myself. Empowered to love myself.
There is magic where you choose to see it, and this jewelry has magnetized love into my life. How great is it that the message sits hidden against me. I can choose to show it if and when I feel like it.
When Katia Designs asked me to be an affiliate, it was as if the stars had aligned. I wanted to tell everyone about this beautiful and magical new jewelry. I wanted everyone to feel the way I felt when wearing these works of art emblazoned with powerful messages of self love. I want you to carry your own personal mantra close to your heart too.
As writers, mantras can inspire creativity. In my book Rescuing the Bad Boy, each of my characters had their own mantras. Donovan’s was “Straight through.” and Sofie’s was “Struggle now, strength tomorrow.” These words grounded my characters and made them more real. These words gave good insight into who they were as people and what they believed about life. Donovan believed that the only way out was straight through, and that there was no alternate way to arrive at the other side. Sofie believed that even though she was going through challenges, they would only serve to make her stronger. Better. More resilient.
In a similar way, what we tell ourselves can shape the way we look at life. The way we look at our writing. The way we look at other people—as friends or foes. Believing in ourselves, and in our own innate power, helps us to face challenges whether they be good old fashioned self-doubt (usually labeled as “procrastination”) or writer’s block, which (spoiler alert) is also sometimes caused by self-doubt.
Better yet, these life lessons that we experience flavor our writing if we let them. If my current heroine’s mantra is “I am f*cking powerful” then I already have a sense of what her strengths and weaknesses are. Maybe she is confident on the outside and scared on the inside. Or maybe she is fiercely independent and can’t let anyone beyond her own wall of protection. See how easy it is to shape a character and give them deep meaning from only a few words?
Embodying these mantras not only helps us to connect with our readers, but anyone and everyone we come in contact with. By saying “I am free” I give others permission to claim their own freedom from whatever is oppressing them. A family member? A belief system? They can then choose to break those chains and see life in a new, more empowering way.
Words cast spells. That’s why it’s called SPELL-ing.
You don’t solely have to wear your mantras. A simple sticky note will do. There are a lot of stickers out there with positive messages as well. We can put these on our bathroom mirrors and in our planners. We can buy oracle decks emblazoned with the words our hearts most need to hear.
If you, like me, find yourself as drawn to Katia’s beautiful pieces as I am, I would love for you to check out her shop. Better yet, I will give you my affiliate link so that you can save on your first purchase.
Once you receive your piece, be sure to let me know that you have chosen your “power”, or “freedom” or maybe you chose “faith”.
Make wearing your bracelet or necklace part of your self-care ritual. Put it on before your write. Touch the words and feel their power. Then, dive in and create something beautiful for your readers. Something that goes beyond what they expect when they pick up your story. Something that touches them deep inside, helps them to remember who they are, and how much they are loved.
That’s what we really do as romance authors. We just dress it up as escapism.
Shh. Don’t tell.
